Every startup founder is a drug addict
When building an innovative company you are fueled by adrenaline, which can crash your inner energy system.
Why it matters
Building a company requires enormous amounts of energy. It's our resource, which needs to refuel and regenerate, or it will run out.
The catch is that we found an effective hack. It's an adrenaline shot that lets us maintain stamina without fueling in the short term.
The trade-off, however, lies in giving up control when the engine is about to slow down or stop. And this can be a serious threat to our companies and moreover, our health and life.
What I think
It’s like with every other addiction.
It’s crucial to be aware of side effects.
Only the fact I recognize that is enough to make me watch myself more closely and stay alert to the red light signals.
And when my inner engine starts beeping for fuel, I stop. Sometimes for a minute, other times for hours, or days.
I stop, refuel, and come back with a full tank.
How to refuel? It depends on what drives you. In my case it’s about having more family time, deep work, and fewer everyday operations, meetings, etc.
What others think
My number one priority in life, above my family, above my work, is my own health. It starts with my physical health. Second, it’s my mental health. Then, it’s my family’s health. Then, it’s my family’s wellbeing.
After that, I can go out and do whatever I need to do with the rest of the world.
